And it's not just big storms, the threats of nuisance flooding and eroding coastlines is also growing. Global warming is accelerating the issue, and some places are making urgent moves to counter the rising seas.

Photographer Paul Gillespie spends hours at his home computer playing with contrasts and highlights for each of his subjects. June 28 marks one year ago since a deadly attack inside the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis. Gillespie began photographing the survivors and victims' families. His photography project is called, “Journalists Matter: Faces of the Capital Gazette.”

Megan Gilliland and photojournalist Alanna Delfino were there as he took a step in that direction, helping to bring hundreds of water purification units to the island, still suffering after Hurricane Maria.
